High Blood Pressure High blood pressure is also known as hypertension. It happens due to high pressure (tension) in the arteries. The arteries are the vessels that carry blood from the pumping heart to all of the tissues and organs of the body. According to recent estimates, nearly one in three U.S. adults has high blood pressure, but because there are no symptoms, nearly one-third of these people don't know they have high blood pressure. Once high blood pressure develops, it usually lasts a lifetime. The good news is that it can be treated and controlled. In some people and as we get older, these changes in blood pressure start to happen at higher pressure levels than normal and this is what high blood pressure means. Causes of High Blood Pressure The top number, which is called the systolic pressure, represents the pressure when your heart is beating. The bottom number, which is called the diastolic pressure, shows the pressure when your heart is resting between beats. Normal blood pressure is below 120/80; blood pressure between 120/80 and 139/89 is called “pre-hypertension”, and a blood pressure of 140/90 or above is considered high blood pressure. If your systolic blood pressure is consistently 140 or higher or your diastolic pressure is 90 or higher, you have high blood pressure and should talk with your doctor about the best ways to lower it. In the remaining cases, high blood pressure results from a recognizable underlying problem. This is called secondary hypertension. Some possible causes are a kidney abnormality, tumor of the adrenal gland or congenital defect of the aorta.
